Yuuki Terumi Character Analysis

Character Analysis: Yuuki Terumi

This whole world is nothing but lies! LIES! Let me show you what I like to call the truth! The truth called DESPAIR!

Background

In the beginning of everything, there existed 3 ancient gods that descended from their very realm in order to oversee all of creation itself. Those are the Amaterasu Unit (or Master Unit: Amaterasu) and its siblings the Tsukuyomi Unit and Susanoo Unit. They were labeled as the Sankishin core units by others for their grand power and stature. Amaterasu was in charge of observing all of creation to make sure the world constantly exists; the Tsukuyomi Unit acts as the absolute defense in order to protect time itself and function as Amaterasu’s shield, while the Susanoo Unit was tasked to cut through and delete time itself to fix any flaws with the Master Unit’s design and function as its sword.

Then one day, in the depths of the Boundary where the 3 gods commit to their duty, the Susanoo Unit developed a consciousness. This new thought-given form found their role in this grand design to be insulting, finding this constant work of cutting time to be akin to a dog tied to a chain forced to follow its orders. In response to this, the consciousness split itself from its original body and became a new spirit that revels in the fear and anger of others directed towards it. This being would become one of the greatest villains in the BlazBlue franchise and his influence can be felt across a majority of the storyline, both mainline and through extended canon. This man’s name is Yuuki Terumi.

When he freed himself from his chain, he left his old body drifting in the Boundary, though he made sure it stuck out like a sore thumb to every human who was researching the Boundary’s nature at the time through its own gateway: a Cauldron, so they’d have their eyes on the Master Unit itself. After a bit of manipulation, he convinced the humans to create artificial humans that are designed to traverse the Boundary without suffering from any ill effects of this realm, but shit hit the fan fast and these artificial beings, now known as Prime Field Devices, developed a consciousness. This terrified the humans, leading to an all out war that results in the entire world being destroyed by a dark creature known as the Black Beast after humanity was pushed into a corner. After this horrific event, the Master Unit, now piloted by a Prime Field Device, resetted all of reality back to 0 and recreated it from scratch, in which no one is able to remember the previous world… except for Yuuki Terumi himself.

Once the world had gone back to normal, Terumi’s plans were beyond devious and calculating. He’s able to gain a new vessel with the aid of an all powerful sorcerer and arguably the only being in existence who rivals his intellect, Relius Clover. Through their research alongside another man Shuichiro Ayatsuki, they seek to gain the power to kill a god: the Kusanagi. However their research goes awry when a Black Beast appears out of the Cauldron and tears apart the vessel he inhabited, with Relius being swallowed by the Black Beast itself and Shuichiro disappearing from the world for a long time. After some time has passed he seeks out his new vessel, an amnesiatic introvert named Kazuma Kval.

Through constant interaction and telling him of his grander purpose in the world alongside revealing his amnesiatic nature, Terumi successfully converts Kazuma to his side and they both become one in the end, though not before being jumped by a cat warrior with a special weapon designed to kill Terumi, and barely coming out before a werewolf man by the name of Valkenhayn ambush him and take him to his castle. There Terumi was once again locked in chains by an all powerful vampire family called the Alucards, and was soon mind controlled by another powerful sorcerer named Nine. Against his will, he aided the werewolf, the sorcerer and several other powerful warriors against the Black Beast with his vast intellect and knowledge of the world, and would be immortalized in the history books as one of the Six Heroes.

After the war is over, he gaslights Kazuma’s childhood friend, Trinity Glassfille and one of the Six Heroes, into breaking the mind control curse he’s under, and takes the opportunity to kill Nine and Trinity via discarding them to the Boundary. He attempts to do the same to the remaining heroes, Hakumen and Jubei, the former being Jin Kisaragi from another timeline wearing Terumi’s old body he discarded since the dawn of time, but fails and is locked away into the Boundary by Hakumen’s act. This results in Kazuma being destroyed in the Cauldron and Terumi being locked for a long time until a godlike entity known as the Takamagahara System released him once again.

After his release from the Boundary, he reunites with Relius, who gives him a new vessel to use named Hazama. Then afterwards he hunts down a young boy by the name of Ragna, manipulates his younger sister Saya to give her brother Jin a corruptive weapon that would drive him into killing everyone around him, resulting in Ragna’s foster mom dying and Ragna losing his arm and left to die while Terumi kidnaps both Jin and Saya. The former becomes his personal puppet to manipulate in the upcoming Civil War, and the latter is given to Relius to create more Prime Field Devices to perfect Kusanagi.

The entire world soon undergoes countless timeline resets due to a certain event where Ragna and Nu, another Prime Field Device made through Saya’s existence, become the black beast and goes back in time to the start of the Dark War, becoming the monster that surprises Terumi, Relius and Shuichiro from back then. After all the timeline resets, he finds the one reset where the timeline finally continues with an incomplete Prime Field Device named Noel saves Ragna from falling into a Cauldron and becoming a Black Beast with Nu. He takes this opportunity to make Noel observe him with her newfound power of the eye to establish his existence onto reality, making him harder to take down. After a long time’s worth of planning, he outsmarts Takamagahara and controls them, finally breaking the one last chain that binds him to another being.

With the aid of the goddess of death Izanami, who possess the body of Saya, Terumi enacts doomsday to bring Amaterasu down to the human reality and have a shot at killing it, but through the remaining Six Heroes’ planning, he’s separated from Hazama and was erased from existence by Hakumen, resorting him to self observe himself back. Being backed to a corner, he robs the tomb of Clavis Alucard, gains an all powerful weapon designed to kill him as a substitute vessel, and ripped Hakumen out of his old body, giving him his original form and absorbing Noel Vermillion into his body to gain her power of the Eye.

After traversing the Boundary to reach the true power of the Azure that everyone was after, Ragna, Jin in the current timeline and the ghost of Trinity thwarted his plans, ending his life, though not before taking his death with stride and dying a laughing mad man, once again restrained by the god he despised his entire existence.

Before we Start

This entire analysis will cover the mainline games and all extended canon media for BlazBlue such as the novels, Xblaze, Alternative Dark War and any other official media. Alter Memory will not be included due to some of the inconsistencies the anime has with the main games like with characterization of some characters and some plot progression not lining up with the games. The vessels that Terumi has throughout the series will be factored in given that he’s been either a part of them for a long while, or they’re very story relevant and is his ultimate form, so those will be taken into consideration to cover all bases for Yuuki Terumi. BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle will only get a passing mention just to explain what would change or be added if the game was factored into the overall analysis, but the mainline series takes priority in this blog.

Experience, Intelligence and Skill

Terumi has existed since before the beginning of time as his status as one of the Sankishin Core units, which he showcases his knowledge with flying colors in the series. He’s capable of creating an Azure Grimoire/BlazBlue. This weapon is stated numerous times in the series to be a literal cauldron.

The cauldrons and azure grimoire are designed to be a gateway to the Boundary and channel the power of the realm directly, an otherworldly realm beyond the confines of reality itself. The Boundary in question has access to infinite information and memories spanning across all of time itself and is infinite in scope, and this entire realm he can channel the power of with one of his creations rather easily, which tells a lot of how much knowledge he has, but this is only the start of it all.

In Continuum Shift, he was capable of observing all possibilities in existence, which resulted in him outsmarting/outspeeding Takamagahara, a nigh-omniscient supercomputer god who oversaw all of space and time. To back it up, not only does Takamagahara mention no history of any intrusion into their domain, but they confirm what Terumi said about them blinking for a fraction of a fraction of a second by saying that they didn't look for 1/480000th of a second. There also is confirmed an infinite number of possibilities that exist in the BlazBlue world so he observed infinite realities and found the one time out of infinite realities that Takamagahara wouldn't pay attention to. Some more of these possibilities being formed is Relius talking about how the world fall under the Many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, and how every single intervention creates another reality, and it expands into infinity with all of these that exists in the world. So not only would it just be infinite confirmed reality, but it's also expanding each and every single intervention infinitely, so basically infinite realities that are also expanding into more infinite realities that Terumi was constantly observing in order to find a way to outsmart an all knowing god. This is also backed up by Rachel’s recap of Continuum Shift, where she confirms that Terumi oversaw all possibilities to find the one time Takamagahara lowered their guard to exploit.

Terumi's vast knowledge was also needed in order for Nine to create Ars Magus, the main form of power that the BlazBlue world uses to this day. Even the glossary for BlazBlue backs up the insane planning that Terumi has going for him, as it's even stated that it would be an understatement to say that his schemes have schemes of their own

Terumi's also an adept magic user to the point that his knowledge was needed to help rebuild Ishana at the request of Nine, who's one of the ten sages, which even in an island filled with talented individuals, the ten sages are the elite of the elite. Given how Terumi is virtually aware of every single time loop and has existed since the dawn of creation itself, it’s not too out of the ordinary that he’s developed an innate talent to utilize one of the rarer abilities in the series.

Notable Equipment

Geminus Anguium: Ouroboros

Next up is Terumi's primary weapon. Ouroboros is a twin snake-shaped chain that he can control at will. It's also a Nox Nyctores, or a Causality/Phenomena Weapon as the series calls it. They're the most powerful sets of Armagus that was created during the Dark War against the Black Beast. The Ouroboros is also a sentient weapon that's capable of choosing its wielder, as evidenced with Yukianesa being able to control Jin to where he couldn't unleash it until he dominated its will through the Power of Order. The Nox Nyctores can also make sure the wielder is incapable of having any negative emotions to hinder their combat capabilities.

Ouroboros can also function as a form of fast traversal, as Terumi can use it to zip around the battlefield like he’s Spiderman, only without the limited web shooters and the magical chain being something he can command at will. This is far more apparent during his time as Hazama where his chains function as one of his primary mobility options, letting him zip around the battlefield to catch his foes off guard on top of sniping them from a distance with his chains.

Another important thing about the Nox Nyctores is that they're self observing weapons, as Relius describes them as being able to observe itself and rectify its existence, and the more potent the observation is, the more powerful it becomes as a weapon. Kokonoe even compares it to Litchi's Liquid Theory of Seithr, where at a conceptual level, it's almost identical to the Nox Nyctores creation, and this Theory is proven by the NOL to being capable of creating the Prime Field Devices, Observers who can rectify their existence onto reality by acknowledging it. So the weapon itself can literally build itself into existence so trying to destroy it normally will not work.

More importantly, the literal core of a Nox Nyctores that's used for the creation of it is a literal Black Beast itself, the black beast being a god of chaos who exists outside of the confines of reality due to it being outside of logic itself. This explains a lot of the corruptive nature of the Nox Nyctores where those who try to use them either lose their senses or go insane akin to how Sauron’s Ring in LOTR functions, so trying to disarm Terumi of Ouroboros won’t help when it not only has a mind of its own, but can mess with your perception of reality for trying to use it.

Ouroboros' specific abilities is that it can attack the mind and emotions of those it strikes, with Lambda being one of its main feat of what mind it can break. Regardless of if she won or lost, she couldn’t fight off the spell and needed Jubei to help her get out, with her losing screen showing that Jubei arrived too late and the narrator describing her as being relatively normal, and that only her mind was shattered.

Lambda’s mind being shattered by Ouroboros is important because the Prime field devices are made to traverse the boundary, and they're completely fine despite this realm being lovecraftian in nature, where trying to process it or touch it is enough to drive you insane or destroy your mind/being as evidenced with Arakune’s entire existence. So Terumi can essentially break through the mind hax resistance of someone withstanding an entire lovecraftian realm for extended periods of time. This is consistent as shown in Central Fiction, where Terumi literally drove Nu-13 crazy into a bloodlust frenzy despite her being fine going through the boundary numerous times in the past.

Last but not least, one of ouroboros' more deadlier moves is that it can drag people into the Boundary itself, with showing that trinity was dragged into an empty void, and Nine was dragged into the boundary by Ouroboros.

The Nox Nyctores can also resist the effects of Phenomena Intervention, as evidenced with the IDEA Engine: a weapon made by Kokonoe, which is designed to function near identical to a Nox Nyctores and be similar in power, but compared to a Nox Nyctores, its resistances towards phenomena intervention are more unstable.

The Nox Nyctores and Magic are capable of scarring the soul itself, and its potency is strong enough to transcend phenomena Intervention itself, with more proof of this happening with Ragna suffering wounds from Nu-13, who has a Nox Nyctores. Contrary to what other folks like to believe, this is not exclusive to Ragna only due to the azure grimoire. Not only is a Nox Nyctores wound generally stated to be a very severe type of damage to get in the first place, but characters like Arakune and Jubei have been inflicted by wounds by a Nox Nyctores and Magic respectively and both don't even have an azure grimoire on them. The former even flat out dies to these wounds and is stated that he cannot regenerate by the narrator itself.

Overall, the potency of the nox nyctores being able to leave wounds on your body that you can't heal from, or scar your soul goes beyond even Phenomena intervention from the gods themselves, so anything that their power scales to, the nox nyctores or magic's power is a tier higher than that. It can even rebuild itself from Self-Observation and is capable of resisting the effects of Phenomena Intervention, making it a very impervious weapon in a wide variety of situations.

Butterfly Knives

Yeah not much to say about this one. Terumi has a pair of butterfly knives that he keeps at all times if he ever wants to get up close and personal. Fun fact, his shoes also have a hidden blade inside of them.

Hihiirokane

One of Terumi’s more unique tools at his disposal. During his trip to the Boundary, he finds the grave of Clavis Alucard, who stored this magical weapon in his coffin to keep it away from others. Hihiirokane, or Time Killing blade in some alternate names, is a weapon with no true form. It’s capable of changing forms to the wielder’s desire and can attack the spirit directly. This weapon is also one of the few weapons in the series that has any chance of killing Terumi even with his immortality and is stated to be beyond all definitions of space and time. Terumi in the story absorbs Hihiirokane into his very being when he separated from Hazama, and even has it merged with Ouroboros to increase its potency to the point that it's capable of ripping Hakumen’s soul out of the Susano’o Unit.

Hazama

As Terumi’s primary vessel for the mainline series, Hazama exists to help Terumi commit many atrocities in the world without him needing to resort to Self Observation to constantly maintain his existence. He’s a vessel with his own sentience and personality akin to Terumi’s previous vessel: Kazuma Kval. His entire existence is an Azure Grimoire itself, more specifically one that’s far beyond what Ragna’s Azure Grimoire is in power prior to him gaining the IDEA Engine. Unlike how Ragna’s Azure functions where striking down on his foes would heal himself, Hazama’s Azure being activated creates a field of life draining properties around himself, allowing him to constantly heal when anyone is close by draining their life essence. It also has the bonus benefit of shutting down the power of anyone close to him, more notably Ragna’s Azure Grimoire as Hazama’s Azure Grimoire being activated disabled Ragna’s ability to rely on his Azure. Hazama also generally shares the same weapons as Terumi does with his own Ouroboros and a pair of butterfly knives. During his time as Hazama, he can swap in and out of his personas at will, which helped a lot with keeping a low profile, and he can extend this to just swapping in and out his forms as Terumi with Hazama. Terumi was ripped out of Hazama during the events of Chronophantasma and due to Hazama gaining more self awareness of himself as opposed to just existing as Terumi’s vessel, the latter cut ties with him, both figuratively and literally in order to find a better vessel to suit his existence, so any matchups with Terumi would need to specify whether or not he has Hazama as his vessel or not.

Susano’o Unit

Terumi’s original form and his most powerful state possible. The Susano’o Unit is one of the Sankishin Core Units; the 3 gods that have existed since the dawn of time managing the BlazBlue world’s function. Susanoo acted as the sword to the Master Unit: Amaterasu while its other sibling Tsukuyomi acted as the shield. Tsukuyomi and Susanoo functioned as polar opposites to each other’s duty, where Tsukuyomi is designed to protect time itself, Susanoo can slash through time itself, as evidence with Hakumen (the owner of the Susanoo Unit for a majority of the series) being able to slash through time itself to see into alternate timelines and even target a specific target’s time, resulting them in being erased from existence completely.

Terumi discarded this body way back in the day when he developed sentience as he found it to be a cage due to him constantly working under his sister Amaterasu without his own free will, but after being separated from Hazama in the events of Chronophantasma, he eventually gets his body back from Hakumen and he can fuse with the Susano’o Unit at will to regain his former power. Terumi can even summon the Susano’o Unit out of thin air and merge with it, and even have an in canon reason for people not stopping him mid transformation as his energy can attack anyone who tries to strike him down mid transformation. With his original form complete he dons the title Takehaya Susano’o, and has one of the most kickass battle speeches on par with Hakumen.

Techniques and Abilities

By Himself:

Drive: Force Eater

Terumi’s main Drive, which in universe is considered the power of one’s soul. Force Eater allows Terumi to build up a lot of Heat (in gameplay terms he builds a lot of meter to perform super moves). This can extend to any of his Seithr enhanced abilities or even his Ouroboros.

Overdrive: Nightmare Reaper

Terumi’s Overdrive state where his base abilities get enhanced several fold. In this state the energy absorption increases more than usual on top of being capable of draining the opponent’s Heat (as shown above), which leads to some devastating comebacks as he can utilize their own Heat against them.

Crush Trigger

A universal ability in the BlazBlue series. Terumi charges his knife with enough power that he can break his opponent’s barriers, leaving them exposed to any incoming damage for a short period of time due to the knockback of the blow.

Snakebite

One of Terumi’s standard moves. He rushes into the opponent with his hand imbued with Seithr and launches them in the air before pulling them down with Ouroboros.

Retaliating Fang

Terumi’s special grab attack. He wraps the opponent into Ouroboros chains and shreds them apart before they’re sent flying in the air for a few seconds.

Cleaving Fang

One of Terumi’s trademark moves, when the opponent is down on the ground, he proceeds to stomp their head into the dirt. Get used to seeing this guy use his legs a lot, he has a habit of stomping opponents into the ground when he feels like it (and is one of the more entertaining parts of his gameplay).

Agonizing Fang

A standard headbutt where Terumi strikes his foes with a Seithr infused headbutt.

Gleaming Fang

One of Terumi’s supers. He infuses his body with Seithr and rushes down on his foe to shred them apart. In Overdrive this move is enhanced to attack on both sides. He can do this move in the air as well with similar results.

The Divine Twin Blades

Another instance of his legs doing the talking. Terumi spins in the air to kick his foes sky high with his Seithr infused kicks as a way to catch them off guard. In his Overdrive state he follows it up with a hard knockdown for extended damage.

Serpent’s Laceration

If you thought Cleaving Fang was a bit too many kicks, this takes it to the next level. Terumi proceeds to stomp his foes into the dirt before he kicks them up in the air and does a nasty kick that sends them flying to any nearby wall. His Overdrive version increases the amount of stops to deal extra damage. He also has an alternate variation of this super where he trips them into the ground and rubs his boot onto them while mocking them before sending them flying into the wall.

Venomous Bite

Terumi’s counter move. He walks towards his foe spinning a piece of Ouroboros in his hand, and when hit, he vanishes into the air before reappearing with Ouroboros wrapped all around his foe and crushing them from all angles. His Overdrive state increases the damage several fold.

Serpent’s Cursed Sting

One of Terumi’s more devastating attacks in gameplay. He summons a dagger infused with Ouroboros’ power, slashes the opponent twice before pinning them onto a makeshift wall, hitting them with whatever Heat Terumi had stored in him before sending them flying with 1 of 3 different variations of kicks. In his Overdrive state, he can not only have this move hit harder, but he can drain his opponent’s Heat in the process to extend the pain (as shown above), allowing him to hit far harder depending on the energy they’ve obtained. He ends this with him rubbing his boot on their head, belittling them, and kicks them to any nearby obstacle.

Screeches of the Condemned

One of many ways Terumi can attack from a distance. Terumi sends Ouroboros flying at his opponent and can even use this to snipe them in the air. He proceeds to toss them around with his chains and utilize his own version of Maximum Spider from Marvel vs Capcom where he flies from different corners of the area slashing and kicking them higher and higher into the air before he divebombs onto his foe with a Seithr infused attack. His Overdrive state can even break through one’s barrier.

Thousand Fangs

Yet another variation of Terumi letting his legs do the talking. He kicks his opponent one time and rapidly hits them with numerous Seithr strikes before sending them sliding through the ground with one last boot to the face.

Gleaming Slash

A unique variation of Gleaming Fang. Terumi comes at his opponent in the air and instead of zipping to the back of them, he strikes them upward with his Seithr infused attack.

Bloody Banquet of the Leviathan

Terumi’s rendition of Eternal Coils of the Dragon Serpent. He wraps his opponent with the Ouroboros chains while striking a Jojo pose, pulls them into him with Ouroboros and proceeds to shred them apart with his knives before infusing his body with Seithr and wrapping the opponent’s body in Ouroboros chains to rip them apart, all the while laughing like a maniac.

Dungeon of Serpents

Terumi proceeds to kick the opponent up in the air before creating a portal underneath to unleash a torrent of Seithr energy to attack his opponent as they get closer to the ground.

The Unholy Wrath of the Basilisk

Terumi’s iconic finishing move. He strikes the ground with Ouroboros to wrap his opponent into the chains while opening a portal to send a torrent of Snake-shaped Seithr energy to strike at his foes endlessly while cackling in the background. After the torrent ends, he transforms into the Shadow of the Sankishin Susano’o Unit, creating the sword of Susano’o out of his hand and proceeds to slash them and deleting their entire existence. Once he’s done he proceeds to laugh more like a maniac as more Seithr is exuding from his body.

As Hazama:

Drive: Ouroboros

Hazama’s main drive attack. He’s capable of shooting Ouroboros out of thin air, pelting at his opponents from different angles and altitudes. He can utilize Ouroboros as a limited form of flying and traversal as he can zip across the battlefield to catch his opponents off guard.

Overdrive: Jörmungandr

Hazama’s Overdrive state and in lore is him activating the Azure Grimoire that is his body. He creates a life-draining field around him and anyone who’s close to him will have their life force sucked out of them and replenish his health in the process.

Crush Trigger

A universal ability in the BlazBlue series. Hazama charges his knife and swings downward with enough power that he can break his opponent’s barriers, leaving them exposed to any incoming damage for a short period of time due to the knockback of the blow.

Venom Sword

A standard move for Hazama, he shoots out a streak of Seithr at his opponent.

Vengeful Viper

Hazama’s altered stance mode, he slaps his opponent with a seithr infused hit and enters a quickened stance of Serpent’s Benediction to catch his foes off guard.

Serpent’s Benediction

Hazama’s primary stance. He charges his hand with Seithr which allows him to do the following moves:

Falling Fang

Hazama jumps at his opponents to slam them into the ground with a Seithr-infused strike.

Rising Fang

Hazama causes a rising kick with Seithr empowering his attack that sends his foes flying in the air.

Devouring Fang

Hazama attacks his foes from underneath with a Seithr infused strike with his knife, causing them to spin rapidly in the air.

Serpent’s Redemption

A fake-out move that lets Hazama move with afterimages to bait his opponent into an unsuspecting trap.

Hungry Coils

Hazama fires Ouroboros from his hands to catch anyone in the air and yanks them to the other side of the field while they slide across the ground.

Wind Serpent’s Fang

One of Hazama’s combo ender techniques in game. He does an aerial axe kick that sends the foe flying down into the ground while catching his hat in the process (He likes that hat a lot).

Shadow Serpent

A newer iteration of his aerial combo ender in game. He does a nasty axe kick that sends both him and his opponent crashing to the ground.

Bloody Fang

Hazama’s grab attack. He uses his knife to break his opponent’s guard, leaving them susceptible to any incoming damage. In his Unlimited state, he can take this attack to the next level where he does multiple slashes at his opponent and sends them flying back with 3 gigantic serpent heads crashing down on them.

Serpent’s Infernal Rapture

One of Terumi’s nasty reversal moves. He kicks his opponent so hard that they’re sent sky high until crashing back down, usually being set up for a whole combo. His overdrive state amplifies the kick with Seithr to hit harder than normal.

Eternal Coils of the Dragon Serpent

Hazama makes a gesture and Ouroboros entraps his targets from underneath them. He then pulls the victim towards himself with Ouroboros and slashes them numerous times with his knives and creates 3 serpent heads made of Seithr to strike them down as the final blow. His Overdrive state makes him shred his opponents more time before he takes his hat off, and delivers a nasty kick with the 3 snake heads before putting his hat back on and laughing at the pain he inflicted.

The Serpent’s Unholy Wrath

Hazama’s more deadly grab techniques. He does his Serpent’s Benediction stance and proceeds to grab his opponent, to which they’re carried up off the ground before he stomps them into the dirt before he kicks them to a wall. His Overdrive is even deadlier as while he does the stomping, the life draining field is actively draining the target’s health, and he rubs his boot into their head akin to Terumi, mocking them before kicking them away.

Den of Hungry Snakes

Hazama’s first Unlimited distortion super. He vanishes into the air and does an aerial axe kick, followed by a sweeping strike that sends his opponent in the air, where he proceeds to launch Ouroboros into the air to catch the them and slam them in the ground over and over until they land next to him, to which he kicks them away like trash while laughing like a mad man.

The Serpent God’s Fury

Hazama zips behind his opponent before slashing them in the back with his knife infused with Seithr. He starts laughing before he shreds them up with his knives, and kicks them into the ground in a similar fashion to Serpent’s Unholy Wrath, all the while draining the target’s health in the process.

Glimmering Fang of the Basilisk

Hazama’s Exceed Accel. He slashes his opponent horizontally with his knife before kicking them up in the air, dragging them down into the ground and slashing them away.

Hungry Darkness of 1000 Souls

Hazama’s finishing move. He calls upon numerous chains around himself which sends his foe flying in the air, before he manifests numerous snakes from Ouroboros to entangle his opponent high in the air. Once the entanglement is done, a gigantic snake appears and leaps down on his foe to deal the fatal blow, which leaves their body lifeless on the floor as Hazama takes off his tie mocking their weak strength.

As Takehaya Susano’o:

Drive: Divine Warrior

Susano’o’s main drive attack. Being a story parallel to how Terumi’s getting used to his old body again, he unlocks more and more of his moves when landing his drive attacks. He can even charge them up without the need to attack his opponents.

Overdrive: Shrieks of the Entombed

Susano’o’s Overdrive state. When activated, all of his moves that have not been unlocked as of the moment are fully available and are at max potential for him to deal devastating combos he normally has to unlock.

Crush Trigger

A universal ability in the BlazBlue series. Susano’o can charge his leg with enough force that he can break his opponent’s barriers, leaving them exposed to any incoming damage for a short period of time due to the knockback of the blow.

Sundering Claws

Susano’o’s starting special move and his level 1 ability. He charges at his foe with his shoulder head to bite them hard. When fully unlocked, he does a launching attack afterwards that sends his opponent spinning in the air, leaving them vulnerable to any combos he can do.

Towering Flame

Susano’o’s level 2 ability. He smashes the ground with enough force the ground cracks and releases a torrent of energy to send his opponent flying in the air.

Megalith

Susano’o’s level 3 move. He kicks the dirt with such force that it releases a torrent of energy to his opponent. When leveled up to max, he can break the opponent’s barrier in the process.

Hunter’s Fang

Susano’o’s level 4 move. He spins in the air like Sonic the Hedgehog to slam his opponent in the ground. While on the air he can hit them numerous times while crashing down on them. In the max state it releases a massive wave of energy on impact with the ground that can catch anyone in the air off guard.

Dancing Dual Kick

Susano’o’s level 5 move. He charges at his opponent in the ground like a crocodile before he kicks them up in the air akin to Sol Badguy’s Grand Viper in Guilty Gear.

Inevitable Calamity

Susano’o’s level 6 move. He charges an electric energy ball in his hand that hits his opponent rapidly if they’re near him. He can do this quickly or hold it on for a few seconds longer to deal more damage.

Splintering Thrust

Susano’o’s level 7 move. He charges at his opponent with brute strength and crashes them onto a nearby wall akin to Rugal’s God Press in King of Fighters.

Blade of Judgment

Susano’o’s level 8 and final move to unlock. He swings a giant sword made of energy to slash his opponent from a distance, which sends them flying as a result.

Liberating Dagger

Susano’o’s Distortion move when Blade of Judgment is unlocked. He charges his sword up to swing with enough intensity that the opponent bounces off the wall.

Strike of the Possessed God

One of Susano’o’s most powerful attacks in the game. He punches his opponent really hard and proceeds to unleash every single move he has unlocked and ends it all with a gigantic mouth beam that deals a lot of damage. His Overdrive state allows all of his strikes to hit with far more ferocity, yelling at them to die constantly while he unleashes his power.

Collapsing Resentment

Susano’o’s Overdrive distortion. He unleashes all of the seals in his movelist and has all of them unlocked right away, bypassing the need to constantly land his drive moves to unlock his attacks in game.

Bloodspiller

Susano’o’s Exceed Accel. He punches his foe very hard in the stomach before spinning upwards dragging and ripping his opponent in the process before he slams them down into the ground for the finishing blow.

Roar of the Mad King

Susano’o’s Astral Finish. He slams his foe into the ground before they’re sent flying and he releases his energy sword and starts swinging so hard the sword starts attacking every single part of the location they’re in, before revealing every single part of the battlefield being ripped apart by the God of Destruction’s power.

Phenomena Intervention/Observation

One of the most diverse abilities in the entire franchise. Terumi is stated and shown being capable of Observing and Interfering with events. Observation is an ability inspired heavily from the Schrodinger’s Cat theory of Quantum Mechanics. Whatever is being “Observed” flat out exists in the world, and if they’re not “Observed”, they cease to exist in the world. Observation and Phenomena Intervention are used interchangeably as the act of Phenomena Intervention involves Observation being one of the core components when the ability is being utilized. Phenomena Intervention (or PI for short), is the act of and “Intervening” upon events and changing them to the user’s liking. To dumb down the ability, it’s reality warping on crack, and throughout the franchise it’s shown to create so many different effects on the target and environment. Here are the list of abilities that Observation and Phenomena Intervention are capable of:

Subjective Reality: Observers are capable of making things that they perceive to be real.

Existence Erasure: PI is capable of erasing entire realities, and Observers can erase beings from existence by not observing them at all.

Probability Manipulation: With PI, the users are capable of manipulating the chances of a certain event by manipulating it to what outcome they choose happens.

Quantum Manipulation: Observation and PI as a whole is flat out stated to be Quantum Superpositional Manipulation, and its whole thing is heavily based off of Schrodinger’s cat of Quantum Mechanics.

Space-Time Manipulation: Kokonoe, as a relatively weak Observer is able to warp space and time through her Observation. Other users are capable of stopping time with PI, and the Embryo’s power of PI is capable of warping space itself.

BFR: One of the most basic applications of PI is being capable of warping people from one place to another.

Statistics Amplification: Observation is capable of determining the effectiveness of a weapon’s power, and the more it’s being Observed, the more powerful it becomes, and this extends to individual people with Hakumen being amped by Rachel’s intervention.

Causality Manipulation: PI is stated numerous times to be capable of manipulating causality, plus Phenomena and Causality are used interchangeably in the franchise given how the Nox Nyctores are both called a Phenomena Weapon and a Causality Weapon so its literal power is to control cause and effect itself.

Immortality and Resurrection/Regeneration: Observers by default are shown to be immortal on several occasions, and can come back from any form of damage. They’re even capable of Self Observation, which allows them to manifest their entire existence into reality. Terumi used this same ability to come back from Hakumen’s time killer, which killed all the time he had, resulting in his existence being erased, and Nu-13, a self observing being through the Liquid Theory of Seithr, was able to reconstruct her entire existence through sheer force of will while in the Boundary, which can erase you across history.

Conceptual Manipulation: The Embryo’s power of PI is stated to being capable of manipulating entire Concepts like the Concept of worlds, plus it’s able to remove entire concepts like Life and Death as shown with Sech’s plan to remove both concepts from existence through causing another Doomsday by killing Hinata, and Izanami reiterates the same type of statements for Doomsday in Central Fiction.

Power Nullification: Amane’s Observation is capable of slowing down the process of Ragna becoming the Black Beast, with him implying Rachel can do the same thing.

Pocket Reality Manipulation: PIs are shown numerous times to create pocket realities, with Phantom Fields in general being something tied to Observers.

Memory Manipulation: PI is shown to be capable of rewriting memories.

Empathic Manipulation: PI can mess with emotions, as shown with Terumi being able to intervene on emotions in Continuum Shift, and Amaterasu being able to remove emotions entirely with her Intervention.

Death Manipulation: Observers are capable of observing someone’s death into existence, as stated with the description of the Life link being that Observers would be incapable of observing one’s death if the life link is still active.

Law Manipulation: PI is stated to dictate the fundamental laws of reality as those with the power of the Azure are granted the ability to Intervene as shown with Noel and Es.

Information Manipulation: The Embryo’s power of PI can mess with established information at a personal level.

Reality Warping: The Embryo’s power of PI is flat out stated that they can reshape reality to their whim. Valkenhayn even talks about how Izanami Intervening on events allows her to distort the entire environment.

Data Manipulation: PI can mess with Data itself as shown with what happened to Kokonoe.

Sealing: The Embryo’s power of PI can trap beings into a specific world by utilizing concepts as a prison.

Fate Manipulation: PI is stated to be capable of changing fate itself, with those outside of Logic are also stated to exist outside of Fate’s authority.

Mind Manipulation: The Embryo’s power of PI is stated to be able to control minds, as shown with Unomaru’s plan to control all of humanity through this power.

Precognition: PI and Observation allows one to see into the future, as shown with Terumi Observing all Possibilities in the Continuum Shift to outsmart Takamagahara and the T-System being able to predict the future to rewrite events thanks to the Embryo’s power.

Possession: Raquel’s PI was capable of possessing Rachel’s body to communicate to Naoto.

Creation: PI is able to create entire individuals from nothing, as shown with how Hinata was capable of recreating Touya.

Information Analysis: Relius Clover through Observation was capable of figuring out the structure of the IDEA Engine and was able to replicate it from scratch.

Illusion Creation and Power Mimicry: Through PI, characters like Rachel and Amaterasu are capable of creating illusions of characters in the series with their power sets completely intact

Telepathy: PI can telepathically communicate to others, as shown with Kokonoe using intervention Ars to communicate to Tsubaki, plus Kokonoe in general uses a lot of technology to amplify her intervention due to her being not on the same level as Rachel and the others naturally.

Body Puppetry: Kokonoe’s intervention is shown to be able to control Nirvana despite her being incapable of moving.

Soul Manipulation: Observers can target one’s soul if they choose to, as shown with Relius being able to Observe Meifang’s soul.

There are two noteworthy limitations to Phenomena Intervention as a whole, though it’d be loosely considered weaknesses since far more powerful Observers are able to get around these two. The first limitation is that the information of those that exist and does not exist is needed, without it, it would be very difficult to perform PI, implying that one’s existence that can’t easily be defined as existing or not existing would be very hard to perform PI on. Though given how beings that exist outside of logic are stated by Hakumen to be uncertain existences:

それは私やあの吸血鬼と同質のものだ。生きてもいなければ死んでもいない。この世界にとって 「不確定」な存在にな。

It is the same nature as with me and the vampire. Neither alive nor dead. This world's "Uncertain" existence.

Add this onto the fact that Valkenhayn as shown above, despite having a general resistance to PI due to being outside of Logic, cannot fight off far more powerful interventions from someone like Izanami, this would mostly be a problem for normal or low tier observers.

The second limitation for PI is that for observers, they need to observe themselves and the target forever, and not fulfilling both requirements would result in both targets from being erased from existence. Though this again, would only be a limitation for lower tier observers like Kokonoe as she herself stated that a far superior Observer than her can get around this limitation easily.

Magic

As if this man doesn’t have enough powers already, he’s capable of utilizing Magic itself as evidenced above when Nine needed his knowledge on Magic to create Ars Magus and to rebuild Ishana from the ruins of the Dark War due to being an adept magic user. Magic as a power isn’t any normal magic you’d see in more normal series, as it’s a power that exists outside of logic itself (check on the “Invulnerability” section to understand what this means). It’s capable of twisting the laws of the world to the user’s whim and is capable of scarring the soul itself to the point of transcending Phenomena Intervention alongside weapons like the Nox Nyctores.

Invisibility

Terumi’s state as a spirit also grants him the ability to be invisible to the naked eye. Only those with specific senses are capable of detecting him, as shown above when Lambda was able to detect his existence, which caught him off guard. This is further backed up by him being invisible to both Kazuma and Trinity and only being noticeable to the former when he felt like it.

Paralysis Inducement

A spell Terumi has under his sleeve. He can paralyze others with a mere glance, rendering them incapable of fighting back, as shown when he froze Carl in place as he ripped Nirvana apart, and another time against Makoto where he froze her in place despite her trying to run away from him.

Incorporeal

Terumi’s existence as the spirit of the Susano’o Unit renders him into being a ghost in the world. He exists as a metaphysical state in his normal state and due to his incorporeal nature, he’s considered really hard to interact with by those who don’t have the innate abilities to interact with his very being.

Seithr Manipulation

Seithr is the energy source in the BlazBlue series that exists everywhere in the world and originates from the Boundary itself. Its entire existence is a corruptive form of energy source akin to radiation, where small doses of Seithr won’t be harmful to an average person, but heavy doses of them can be considered very deadly to anyone not built with the innate ability to resist its effects. Terumi’s entire spiritual body is made of Seithr and he can utilize Seithr as one of his main forms of attacks through his Drive. The abilities that Seithr is capable of utilizing are as follows:

Poison Manipulation: Seithr is stated numerous times to be poisonous to those that can’t fight off its effects.

Madness Inducement: Seithr can make those exposed to it addicted or driven into a blood starved hunger, as shown with numerous creatures in the world.

Empathic Manipulation: Seithr’s influence can manipulate the emotions of other creatures, turning a peaceful creature into a feral one.

Biological Manipulation: Seithr’s influence can warp the genetic structure of others and mutate them into monsters.

Life Manipulation: Seithr is capable of granting sentience, as shown when Noel had a watermelon seed inside of her, and the Seithr rapidly grew it and even granted it a consciousness and wants to change its structure to something else.

Statistics Reduction: Seithr can make others weaker than normal, as shown with the Zero Squadron not being at their peak due to the influence of the Seithr snow.

Data Manipulation: Seithr is stated to be a literal particle program by Roy and the library itself.

Technology Manipulation: Seithr can mess with technology, as shown with Meifang being unable to use communications due to the seithr’s influence.

Boundary Powers

Due to Terumi’s connections to the Boundary thanks to Ouroboros and the fact that he is empowered by the Boundary itself (as shown above) as well as blessing others with its powers, he is capable of utilizing the Boundary’s power. The different abilities that the Boundary is capable of utilizing is as followed:

Existence Erasure: The Boundary can erase the beings of those who enter it, and the Edge, a realm you need to traverse to reach the Boundary is capable of doing the same thing.

Time Manipulation: The Boundary’s influence in the Cauldron is shown to mess with the flow of time itself.

Corrosion Inducement: Being near the Boundary is enough to corrode one’s entire being.

Transmutation: As shown with Arakune, the Boundary can warp your entire body into something completely different, like a liquefied Seithr monster.

Corruption: The Boundary has shown to corrupt others, like with Arakune, who’s corrupted to being obsessed with the Boundary and Azure’s power.

Information and Memory Manipulation: The Boundary is filled with infinite Memories and Information, and being near it is enough to flood your entire being with both.

Void Manipulation: The Boundary can erase you into the void itself.

Chaos Manipulation: The Boundary can make you swallowed by chaos itself, as stated with Arakune, and through the Black Beast, whose existence is compared to the Boundary and is a god of chaos, similarly to someone like Izanami, who’s the goddess of Death and her literal existence itself is Death, makes this more literal than metaphorical.

Absorption

As fitting with a character that has a snake motif, he’s able to absorb and consume weapons and other people, as shown when he absorbed Noel into his very being and earlier on in the story when he snatched Hihiirokane from Clavis’ grave and absorbed it into his very being.

Acausality

Being one of the few beings in the series that can remember the different time loops the series has done, Terumi is unaffected by any form of alterations to the timeline. Even in alternate universes where certain characters do not exist anymore, he’s fully aware of the grander events of the series without any of his existence being reset back to normal like most of the other characters suffer from.

Adaptation

As someone who’s capable of adapting to whatever situation comes his way, Terumi is capable of adapting against a different assortment of abilities or hostile environment, such as him being capable of adapting against the Embryo itself, a realm capable of all sorts of Phenomena Interventions and can mess with other people’s existence in a wide variety of ways. This adaptation can go to the next level where he’s capable of Observing Jin Kisaragi’s Power of Order, allowing him to develop countermeasures against it even when it’s capable of resisting Phenomena Intervention.

Non-Physical Interaction

As fitting with an all powerful god like Terumi, he’s capable of interacting with incorporeal entities such as souls (as shown above). He can even interact with liquid based creatures like Arakune, being able to physically interact with himself with the instances of fighting his own clone, and can directly attack someone like Hades Izanami, the abstract concept of Death who even her vessel itself was considered uninteractable from someone like Kagura Mutsuki.

Teleportation

Terumi is stated and shown to be able to teleport to other locations at will. This is evident when Kokonoe stated that with Celica nullifying his power, he’d be incapable of teleporting and he had to resort to Phantom to teleport him out (as shown above), and when he steals Noel and teleports with Amaterasu to the gates of the Azure at the end of Central Fiction.

Time Killer

One of Terumi’s most powerful moves with his status as the Sankishin Susano’o Unit. He’s capable of channeling his power to directly “kill” the target’s time that they possessed, effectively erasing them from existence. This has worked on Immortal beings as shown with Hakumen utilizing Time Killer against Terumi himself, though the one major weakness of this technique is that if the target’s time ended or their literal time just flat out doesn’t exist, the move would be rendered ineffective, as shown with Hakumen failing to kill the time Izanami had due to it already being gone a long time ago.

Invulnerability

One of the more overlooked states of being Terumi is a part of, which lets him exist outside of Logic itself. It’s one of the wackier things this series has and is pretty lore heavy so bear with me on this one. So the series has shown in the Dark War that no form of weaponry was capable of harming something like the Black Beast itself. It is elaborated that the main reason why nothing in the world can harm it, not even nukes, is that its fundamental existence is outside of logic, the laws of the world that comprises the 4 main elements and the 2 origins. Any form of weapon or power that is restrained by Logic itself cannot harm beings that are outside of logic, and the main reason why humanity had a fighting chance against the Black Beast is that Nine the Phantom gave them Ars Magus, a fusion of science and magic (the latter being something that exists outside of logic and even bring about things outside of logic). This was the turning point in the Dark War that helped humanity win against the Black Beast since they had weapons that existed outside the laws of the universe. Nine and Terumi elaborates that even if they had an advanced weapon in the far future against the Black Beast, it wouldn’t mean anything if it still operated under Logic itself. So on top of granting some conceptual form of resistance to elemental powers, anyone that exists outside of logic is just flat out immune to any weapons or powers bound by logic, so you can’t remotely harm them whatsoever unless the powers you have can reach this state of existence.

Extrasensory Perception

As fitting with a being that’s adept in magic, he’s capable of sensing other beings despite being invisible to the naked eye. As shown with him being able to detect Trinity Glassfield’s spirit and even detect that her presence was missing from the Muchorin when both Sena and Luna were not familiar at all with another individual in their weapon. Trinity’s spirit is further shown to be invisible to the naked eye when characters like Ragna and Bang are able to sense the third spirit within her despite others not being able to pick up anything on a third existence.

Infinite Corridors

A pretty potent spell Terumi has in his pocket. He can seal people away into a closed off dimension where they’re incapable of escaping easily. While this ability wasn’t outright stated in Continuum Shift, he has done something similar to Rachel Alucard where he’s capable of locking her up in a dark dimension where despite her ability to warp between dimensions, she’s incapable of escaping from it thanks to Terumi being capable of “closing off the entrance and the exit”.

Mind Eater Curse

One of the more noteworthy magic spells Terumi has access to. Taking some cues from his former ally Nine the Phantom, Terumi can implant a curse upon others to control and consume their minds. He can essentially enslave you against your will to do what he wants and as the spell goes on, more and more of the target’s memories are ripped apart, this is shown with what happened to Nu-13 at the end of Central Fiction and Tsubaki Yayoi when she worked under the Imperator herself. This was also implied to have happened to Jin Kisaragi back in the Ikaruga Civil War.

Immortality

Finally onto one of Terumi's biggest factors into a versus debate: His Immortality. To give a TL;DR, he essentially got Sun Wukong’s idea about layered immortality and cranked it so high in terms of the process that it took two entire games worth of story for the main heroes to come remotely close to killing him, so let’s start from the top.

Immortality #1: Observers

So as established above, Terumi is an Observer, who are by default beings that are incapable of dying normally. Such examples include:

Observers are capable of reforming someone’s entire existence from nothing. This is proven when Noel gained the power of an Observer and she observed Terumi’s spiritual form and established his existence into the world. This even extends to themselves as shown when someone like Nu-13, a Prime Field Device who’s capable of self-observation given the conceptual similarities between making a Prime Field Device and a Nox Nyctores, is capable of reforming her existence from the Boundary itself. Hakumen himself is also capable of similar feats where he came back to the real world and had to involve manifesting his entire existence back through sheer force of will. Terumi himself did this as well when he was hit by Hakumen’s time killer and was erased from existence and time, and the next time we see him, he’s fine with the explanation for why he’s back is because of Self Observation. So Observers by themselves are pretty hard to kill conventionally. But this is the tip of the iceberg for what Terumi has in store.

Immortality #2: Life Link

This is achieved thanks to his vessel Hazama, and once again when he regains the Susano’o Unit through absorbing Noel Vermillion into his body. A life link is essentially a link between two individuals that keeps them immortal. In order to kill someone with a life link, you have to kill both participants of the Life link itself at the same time, if you don’t then the person who died would just come back to life immediately. Hazama and Noel are confirmed to have a Life Link with each other, and even Ragna found that killing Terumi himself is considered a pain in the ass due to the fact that the Life Link is active, making the act of killing him pointless.

Immortality #3: Hatred and Fear

As befitting of the man who relishes off the suffering and torment of others, Terumi is capable of being empowered by other’s fear and hatred towards himself. Even one person remotely hating or fearing him is enough to empower him and chain his existence into reality as shown when Ragna’s hatred towards Terumi allowed him to exist in the world.

This power can be taken to the next level as shown with Nine’s hatred for Terumi being so great that he can manifest entire shadows of himself endlessly that can fight in his stead until the end of time. This power can be so great that even an entire world filled with nothing but fear and hatred is more than enough to let Terumi surpass the Black Beast’s power.

Immortality #4: Terumi’s fundamental existence

Terumi’s existence has become a fundamental root into the world, as established when Ragna talks about the core root of Terumi’s existence is him as the god Susano’o, making him somewhat hard to kill. Nine even elaborates on how as long as he’s Terumi, he’s incapable of dying and how trying to kill the spiritual body means nothing as the only way to have a shot at killing Terumi is to erase his entire existence, something Kokonoe herself backs up the game prior as a requirement to take down Terumi. Even Relius himself questions if Terumi being killed is remotely possible.

Immortality #5: All the beings that keep Terumi alive

All of the above sounds pretty nuts in of itself, but here’s where it gets even nuttier. Terumi, as mentioned before, exists since the dawn of creation since he's one of the Sankishin core units. He literally remembers the entire world before when humanity found the master unit and went to war and caused everyone to die. This is proven with his exposition dump to Noel about the events of the Prime Field War and his conversation with Jin and Ragna where he talks about humanity making prime field devices to find the Azure only to fear what they’ve created.

Not only that but he's even aware of the fact that Ragna is the central fiction, which is the sole reason why all of the timeline resets happen in the first place, because whenever he dies, Amaterasu resets all of existence to bring him back to life. This is important because making Ragna angry at him for destroying his childhood helped cement his existence onto reality due to him feeding off of fear and hatred. Ragna also has a Life Link just like Terumi, only this time it’s with Nu-13, and Nu-13 as a Prime Field Device is already hard to kill when as established above, she can reform her existence from the Boundary, a realm that can erase your entire existence, through sheer force of will. This is further cemented with the Life Link where you need to kill both users of the life link at the same time for them to actually die. Ragna’s existence is also implied to be kept alive by Rachel Alucard, where in her discussion with Tsubaki Yayoi about how she views Ragna, she explains that in order for Ragna to truly die and “for evil to be eradicated from the world”, Rachel herself must also die if Ragna doesn’t get slain by Jin or Tsubaki, implying her existence is also keeping him up and running in the world at that point.

Rachel Alucard herself is also someone that’s considered hard to kill. As established in the first section of the immortality list, her status as an Onlooker renders her unkillable to the point that her fundamental existence can come back even if she doesn’t want to. One of the more blatant examples of this is when Hazama tries to torture Rachel when she’s already lost so much of her Onlooker powers that she can barely defend herself, and yet despite everything Hazama tries to do, nothing is capable of killing her and that her existence just regenerates from everything, with Hazama even questions if he’ll be alive by the time he finds a normal way to kill Rachel Alucard. The last noteworthy thing with Rachel Alucard is that she also has a Life Link with Naoto Kurogane, making her hard to kill if Naoto is still alive.

The next person that ties to what makes Terumi unkillable is the Successor of the Azure Noel Vermillion herself, who is one of the most top tier immortals in the series due to the following feats:

Even after being separated from Hazama; the person who’s the prime target for the Life Link Noel Vermillion has, when Terumi got the Susanoo unit back from Hakumen, he absorbed Noel vermillion into his very being, gaining her status due to being not affected by doomsday anymore.

Next up on the list is Hazama, who even before he had the Life Link established with Noel Vermillion, has been shown to regenerate from being kicked so hard he was reduced to a small puddle of blood. His existence is also the Azure Grimoire itself, allowing him to drain the life force of anyone near him so he has different means of being able to keep himself alive even without the Life Link, so you’d have to get through all of that to have a shot at killing him.

Furthermore we have Nine the Phantom, the second character that’s fueling Terumi’s existence through sheer hatred. Nine’s existence is fundamentally outside of Logic itself just like Terumi, rendering her immune to anything bound by the laws of the universe and is an established Observer due to her having the capabilities of Intervening on others and having her own Phantom Field.

Taking the penultimate spot is Hades: Izanami, the person who’s tied to Noel Vermillion’s existence as a means to keep herself alive via Life Link. From the start, Rachel Alucard has explained that Izanami is the literal concept of death itself, bringing death to the entire world and being unkillable even compared to Rachel herself, who basically described Izanami as far beyond a mere immortal, where killing Rachel is theoretically possible, Izanami cannot die. This statement of her being death itself is reinforced numerous times in the series, and even knowledgeable characters like Relius Clover comments on how Izanami herself utilizes vessels to exist in the world, further cementing the fact she’s a literal concept and not just someone with hype talk. Her immortality is further proven to be broken beyond relief when Izayoi tries to stab her with the Immortal Breaker but it’s shown to be ineffective against her. Only one character had any shot at trying to kill Izanami, that being Ragna the Bloodedge, but this was rendered null and moot due to the fact that Izanami’s tied to the Izanagi System itself, where she’s the literal Drive of Amaterasu itself. So long as Amaterasu exists, Izanami is capable of resurrecting endlessly, and she’s fully aware of all the timeline and reality resets that occur in the world so anyone that doesn’t have any way to resist this power would be reset back to square one, and Izanami would just have prior knowledge from the get go to face off whoever tries to kill her.

Last, but certainly not least is the Master Unit: Amaterasu. Amaterasu is the omnipotent god who observes all of existence into being and is what keeps both Ragna and Izanami alive as established above, so you’d imagine if you can kill the Master Unit, both Ragna and Izanami would just lose their immortality or just disappear right? Well that wouldn’t be beneficial as without Amaterasu, all of existence would vanish, and Terumi is fully immune to any changes in reality even from the Master Unit itself, so this is more of a suicide attempt assuming the character in question has no ways of surviving total destruction of all things in existence.

To summarize, in order to have any shot at killing Terumi, you'd have to get rid of the people who's anger towards him fuels his existence, including Ragna who's literally protected by a life link from Nu-13, Rachel being somewhat responsible for keeping him around with how she describes how Ragna needs to die, otherwise he'd come back so she'd have to die (who has her own state of immortality as well); and get rid of Nine, who's outside of logic, and her hatred is strong enough to fuel powerful shadows of Terumi to fight on his behalf. Get rid of Noel Vermillion, who's life linked with Hazama and Hades Izanami, the former having his own regenerative properties to render him hard to kill and the latter is the literal concept of death itself who's also Amaterasu's drive, making sure that even if you somehow kill death itself, Amaterasu just brings her back to life via the Izanagi system, and try to end Amaterasu, who's literally sustaining all of creation and existence itself. So killing either Izanami and Ragna would just reset all of existence and Terumi's still fine and dandy, so you're basically starting all over again with him just being aware that you somehow know what ties his existence and he'll just off you before you get the chance. On top of ALL of that, you have to at bare minimum try to erase Terumi’s entire existence, as anything less than that is insufficient when it comes to trying to kill him. To give a better visual indication on how the Immortalities are all linked together, here’s a visual chart that lists off all of the connections in a way that’s easy to explain.

Resistances

Phenomena Intervention Abilities: Is stated to be immune to Phenomena Interventions, which renders him unaffected by the following abilities:

  • Subjective Reality, Existence Erasure, Probability Manipulation, Quantum Manipulation, Space-Time Manipulation, BFR, Causality Manipulation, Conceptual Manipulation, Power Nullification, Memory Manipulation, Empathic Manipulation, Death Manipulation, Law Manipulation, Information Manipulation, Reality Warping, Data Manipulation, Sealing, Fate Manipulation, Mind Manipulation, Precognition, Possession, Information Analysis, Illusion Creation, Power Mimicry, and Body Puppetry

Boundary Powers: Terumi is stated and shown on numerous instances to be capable of withstanding the Boundary’s power and even be enhanced by the Boundary’s power, which makes sense when it’s where he was born as he shed his Susano’o Unit long before the events of the game, which would include the following abilities:

  • Existence Erasure, Time Manipulation, Corrosion Inducement, Transmutation, Corruption, Information Manipulation, Memory Manipulation, Void Manipulation, and Chaos Manipulation

Seithr Abilities: As is the case with him surviving in the Boundary, he can withstand all of the Seithr that exists there too, which is stated to be toxic to any person in heavy doses, which includes the following abilities:

  • Poison Manipulation, Madness Inducement, Empathic Manipulation, Biological Manipulation, Life Manipulation, Statistics Reduction, Data Manipulation, Technology Manipulation

Fear Manipulation: The Nox Nyctores can render the user incapable of feeling any emotions in the middle of a fight such as fear, allowing them to fight at their best capabilities.

Radiation Manipulation: Seithr as a whole is capable of cancelling out Radiation when in contact with it, and Terumi’s body is entirely composed of Seithr itself.

Sealing: As someone with a high skill in Magic and Ars Magus, with the former surpassing the latter, he should vastly surpass the likes of Noel Vermillion, whose Ars Magus power was able to overcome the Truth Grimoire, which is capable of sealing someone away into the Grimoire itself.

Perception Manipulation: Terumi is able to use the Armagus easily without it messing with his senses.

Paralysis Inducement: Terumi is capable of fighting people like Hakumen without having his body frozen on eye contact, even when he’s in Hazama’s body as an Azure grimoire. He’s even capable of facing the Black Beast directly without his body freezing in place like what happened to Tager.

Soul Manipulation and Regeneration Negation: Terumi is capable of withstanding blows and regenerating wounds from a Nox Nyctores numerous times like Okami and Nirvana, both of which are capable of nullifying one’s regenerative properties as shown with Ragna and Arakune. Terumi’s soul is also unfazed by these strikes as well as attacks from magic itself, which is stated to be capable of scarring the soul to the point of transcending Phenomena Intervention much like a Nox Nyctores.

Absolute Zero: Is capable of withstanding and breaking out of Jin’s Yukianesa, which is capable of freezing someone like Azrael in place, who’s capable of sleeping in an Absolute zero cryo prison for several years straight with no issue.

Power Absorption: Is able to fight the Black Beast itself without having his powers being drained from him like what happened to Ripper and Kuon when Touya unleashes the Black Beast powers from his Grimoire.

Unconventional Resistance to Mind Manipulation: Due to the unique process of Terumi’s vessels from either Kazuma or Hazama, he’s able to bypass any mind control spells by being able to separate his consciousness from his body, rendering one of his minds free to not be bound by a spell. Terumi is also capable of fighting people being able to intervene directly inside of his mind, as shown when Trinity and Rachel tried to materialize people inside his mind and he’s capable of recognizing who’s trying to pry into his head and fight them off.

Fire Manipulation, Water Manipulation, Air Manipulation, Earth Manipulation, Light Manipulation and Darkness Manipulation: Due to being outside of Logic, he’s outside the bounds of the 4 elements and the 2 great origins which comprises of these elements, rendering any normal attacks from them irrelevant.

Feats

Overall

  • Was behind most of the major events in the series.

  • Outsmarted numerous characters with his long years worth of cunning and precise execution.

  • Is directly responsible for the creation of the 2 biggest Organizations in the BlazBlue world (Sector Seven and the NOL).

  • Deceived characters into bringing his existence onto the world.

  • Outsmarted a nigh-omniscient supercomputer god by finding the one blindspot no one was able to foresee.

  • Tormented so many lives and utilized their pain to his advantage on numerous occasions.

Strength

Durability

Speed

Scaling

The Six Heroes

As one of the Six Heroes himself, Terumi has kept up with his former peers in numerous instances. From the leader Hakumen to Jubei, he clashes with these guys at numerous instances and can keep up with them consistently. Celica as a part of the group is capable of keeping up with individuals like Nine and Trinity so while she’s not officially part of the Six Heroes themselves, she should still be capable of reaching their level.

Ragna the Bloodedge

Our main protagonist and Terumi’s favorite person to torment. Ragna has been Terumi’s sworn enemy from the beginning of his torment and has clashed with him on numerous occasions, most of the time with Terumi being able to overpower him more often than not. Only at the far end of the series does Ragna eventually match and potentially surpass Terumi himself.

Base Ragna

Black Beast

Azrael

The Mad Dog himself and Sector Seven’s most deadliest warrior in chains. Terumi has fought with Azrael at one point to his displeasure due to him not giving him the emotions he craved, and once he donned the Susano’o Unit itself he was capable of surpassing Azrael’s strength as stated by Ragna himself.

The Prime Field Devices

One of the creatures Terumi loves to torment. From Izanami all the way to Mu-12, Terumi has at one point in time fought these beings, and very rarely do they ever get the upper hand on him.

Noel Vermillion

Hades Izanami

Nu-13

The Embryos

The cocoons of the Azure themselves. These beings are capable of messing with the fabric of existence themselves and Terumi has fought one of them in the past (Es to be specific) and was capable of overpowering her when he donned the Susano’o Unit.

Raquel

Es/Hinata

Take-Mikazuchi

The Sankishin Core Unit

As one of the sibling gods in this trio, the Sankishin Core Unit stands above the rest of the cast in the series as the pinnacle of power with very few beings in general matching their overall strength. Rachel as the wielder of the Tsukuyomi Unit is factored in given how she’s exclusively the user of the Tsukuyomi Unit and Terumi is capable of keeping up with her at numerous times.

Master Unit: Amaterasu

Tsukuyomi Unit/Rachel Alucard

Sector Seven

The second most prominent faction in the BlazBlue universe. Terumi’s traded numerous blows from the different characters in this faction, ranging from the cynical genius Kokonoe, to the Red Devil himself, and aside from very specific circumstances, he usually comes out on top with their skirmishes.

Iron Tager

Makoto Nanaya

Kokonoe Mercury

Novis Orbus Librarium

As part of the Novus Orbis Librarium and being one of the top ranked members of the Organization, Terumi has widespread control over the organization and is capable of fighting some of the more powerful members in the Organization.

Jin Kisaragi

Tsubaki Yayoi

Remix Heart cast

Weaknesses

For all of Terumi’s time of planning and manipulation, some of his abilities have some down sides to them. For starters if the opponent he fights is fully aware of how his hatred and fear empowerment works and allows them to be unable to feel any fear or hatred towards him, he won’t benefit from the empowerment from his opponents, as proven when Kokonoe shuts off the part of her mind to allow her to feel emotions, rendering Terumi incapable of feeding off her hatred. This isn’t a complete downgrade in his strength as even when all of existence was rewritten to where no one hated or feared him, Terumi was still capable of giving Ragna a good fight, so this mostly gets rid of any statistics advantage and another form of immortality should no one in the world ever feel negative emotions towards him.

As a being made of Seithr, he doesn’t function well when he’s near certain beings or creatures that are designed to nullify Seithr, as shown when Celica’s mere existence to nullify Seithr is capable of messing with Terumi’s body. Though he can somewhat get around this if Phantom is under his control as she can function fine without the need of Seithr.

Also he has an insane hatred of cats in general, with his vessel Hazama funnily enough developing an allergic reaction to cats.

BlazBlue Cosmology

Yeah there’s no beating around the bush with this one, BlazBlue as a whole essentially has the video game syndrome, where a lot of the franchise’s highest end feats make sense when you look into the lore of the series. Other franchises have this syndrome too such as God of War, The Elder Scrolls, Dark Souls and Kingdom Hearts in general where the feats shown through gameplay isn’t a full representation of their power, and doing a deeper delve into the story gives a better insight to their power, so if you’re wondering why a lot of the feats can be interpreted really high, allow me to explain how this franchise works.

Possibilities and Worlds

In this section, I will be explaining one of the most important and arguably simplest things used in the Blazblue story: Possibilities. In the series Possibilities are consistently used to describe alternate worlds/timelines that exists in the franchise, these examples include the following:

To add more further proof that when they talk about the “world” in referring to the grander story being an entire universe or alternate reality as opposed to it being just a planet, Ragna and Celica literally describes the world as going on and on when staring out into the night sky with endless stars and nebulas as far as the eye can see. To top it all off, there’s confirmation of infinite possibilities to exist in the Blazblue world, so infinite realities exist within the story of Blazblue, which makes the cosmology at bare minimum Multiversal+ since not only are there infinite possibilities to exist, but each of them are confirmed alternate timelines/space time continuums.

There is an argument that could interpret the BlazBlue multiverse itself to being 5th Dimensional (or Low Complex Multiversal) due to the Many worlds interpretation of the series as explained by Relius, and with that it results into a bigger, more uncountable infinity compared to normal infinity with each timeline branching off infinitely based on every event that occurs (See Cantor Set and this video for a better explanation of what “uncountable infinity” means), which can buff the lower end interpretations of the cosmology an extra dimension, but for the sake of keeping this simple, let’s just stick with the BlazBlue multiverse being just infinite timelines.

Alternate Realities/Canonicity

Now that we got the simpler terminology explained, we have to discuss what this entire series is known for, it’s crazy wacky multiverse/timeline storylines where alternate realities canonically. From back in Calamity Trigger, the world is constantly in an endless loop that seemingly never ended, and as a result it would loop itself over and over and over again since Ragna and Nu would always fight, the former losing and they’d both fall into the cauldron, where they’d smelt into the Black Beast and go back in time 100 years into the past to wreak havoc upon the world, causing the Dark War to occur and change the world into what it is today.

Not only that, but numerous realities exist that seem to go on with this endless loop, and it’s further shown in the Arcade modes and alternate routes in the main stories. Unlike most other fighting games where a good chunk of the time, the Arcade endings are mostly fun little what if scenarios that gets overwritten by the main canon, BlazBlue goes out of its way to show that virtually any and all arcade modes and alternate endings in the story modes exist as alternate possibilities. The examples includes the following:

All in all, Arcade modes and the alternate endings in the Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift story modes are equally as canon as the main “true” story route in the series due to numerous confirmation of their existence, so arguments of X route or X arcade not being canon doesn’t hold up to disregard any statements in said routes when the series goes out of its way to show everything being canon in some way shape or form.

The Edge

A realm that exists between the reality everyone exists in and the Boundary itself. The Edge is an endless void where nothing exists, no time, air, light, darkness remotely exists, and being there for about a few hours is enough to drive any normal person insane and can erase other beings from existence.

The Boundary

So now we’ve established that there exists numerous different realities across the entire BlazBlue series, reaching infinite in scope, and with evidence that things that aren’t in the main story path do canonically exists as alternate timelines, we now get to the realm that has been an important part of the BlazBlue story and is what everyone is focused upon.

The layman’s explanation of the Boundary is that it’s a world that doesn’t exist in our reality and has infinite memories and information all dating back to the beginning of time itself. The realm in its entirety is described as infinite in size, further backed up by how the realm is capable of holding infinite amounts of Seithr. The Boundary is also described as somewhat lovecraftian in nature, as not only does it have all knowledge of creation itself and limitless power, but trying to comprehend it or even reach out to it is impossible for any normal person without some part of their existence suffering from irreparable harm. Arakune is a prime example of this as his entire backstory is that he’s a scientist from Sector Seven named Roy who got too close to the Boundary, and became a corrupted slime monster obsessed with the Boundary and the Azure Grimoire. On top of being corrupted by the influence of the Boundary, it can erase someone’s being from existence, mess with one’s mind and humanity, among many other unspeakable things.

Next up, the only way to remotely enter the Boundary is through Cauldrons, these otherworldly gateways that exist in different parts of the world that spew out endless amounts of Seithr.

One other important plot point in the series is that through entering and crossing the Boundary, one is capable of going through time and crossing to alternate realities. Examples would include the following:

One common misconception about the Boundary is that it’s just a portal that just automatically zips you into another world by just approaching it, which isn’t the case given a good chunk of the lore. First off, the Prime Field Devices are all made for the sole purpose of exploring the deepest reaches of the Boundary, which wouldn’t make any sense for it to be a portal if they’re able to enter this realm to explore in the first place. Secondly, the lore constantly describes it as either a complex space that the Master Unit: Amaterasu resides in, another dimension, a plane of reality, and a place not part of the world that houses infinite amount of Seithr. It makes no sense for this to be just a portal to alternate worlds, especially when Jin and Terumi and Trinity are capable of walking through the Boundary without being immediately thrown into another world.

The realm is further described as a complex space that’s capable of connecting all dimensions and is filled to the brim with Seithr, and the Xblaze scans in the previous scans further back it up on it being a realm that doesn’t exist in reality and has infinite amounts of Seithr in it. On top of that, the novels go further to explain the nature of the Boundary and how it’s not just outside of reality, but it transcends it all.

From Phase Shift 0, chapter 4

And then another one. Something had snatched Ragna's gaze.

A Cauldron.

The object was the starting place of the gigantic serpent's crawling traces as it was heading toward the surface. Its large hole was spread out. The hole was surrounded by partially destroyed devices on its rim. Its mouth was filled with surging lava.

It was as if looking through the center of the earth. However, what was on the opposite side wasn't the earth's core, but a space that transcended everything. The Boundary.

On top of that, the Boundary is further elaborated in Bloodedge Experience that it’s a place that transcends time and space, and that all possibilities, events and moments in existence are contained in it. Further supported by Valkenhayn’s statement of Relius being able to transcend time and space when he went through the Boundary itself.

  • The lord of Crimson eyes connected Raquel's spirit to the "boundary". The "boundary" is a place that transcends time and space. Every moment, every event, every possibility is floating there. He wanted to make Raquel aware of everything that existed there. That is what the connection is for.

Seithr

Now that the Boundary is explained, we can discuss the nature of the energy source that exists in BlazBlue. In this world, Seithr exists everywhere; especially thanks to the Black Beast that appeared in the Dark War which polluted the entire planet with its corpse. It functions somewhat similar to Radiation where in small doses it’s not bad but thick amounts of it will cause major damage to the target (though in Phase Shift they do talk about how Seithr is capable of neutralizing actual Radiation itself among other deadly chemical substances so they wouldn’t be similar in existence just from their similar properties). Due to the toxic nature of Seithr, the remnants of Humanity moved to the mountains to make Hierarchical cities to stay away from its dangerous effects, though thanks to the invention of Ars Magus, humanity learned to use it for everyday lives and modern weaponry.

Seithr existing everywhere isn’t just some weird coincidence, as everything in existence is verbatim made of Seithr. Arakune comments on how everything in existence would revert back to its original form of Seithr in Central Fiction, and Sechs in Xblaze commented on how when people die, they just return to Seithr in the end, and all of Seithr in existence came from the Boundary, as stated numerous times across the franchise by numerous reliable source of information.

The Azure Horizon/Realm of the Gods

While not much is known about this realm compared to the Boundary, what we do know is that it exists beyond the gates of the Azure, which is in the deepest reaches of the Boundary and is the home of all gods in the BlazBlue world. This is also the place where the True Azure itself is, which is one of the most powerful things in the franchise.

Before we get into the nitty gritty of the True Azure, we have to establish that there exists numerous versions of “The Azure” in the series. There’s so far confirmed to be 2 types of Azure: the Azure Grimoire, and the True Azure, or Azure Flamed Grimoire in its full title, but let’s start with the first one. It’s stated on numerous occasions to be the most powerful of all the grimoires in the series, Grimoires essentially being magical weapons that can do a wide variety of things, and despite the name, they’re not books as they can take the shape of anything, with Ragna’s arm being a prime example of it when it’s now an Azure grimoire in the shape of his arm after what happened to him as a kid. The Azure grimoire is stated on more than one occasion that it’s essentially a portable Cauldron, AKA the gateway to the Boundary itself, and its power is to channel the Boundary itself to make the user far more powerful than normal. Ragna and Hazama have an Azure grimoire, with the latter’s being far superior to Ragna’s in every way shape and form, but even with Hazama’s superior Azure, it still pales in comparison to the True Azure.

The True Azure is stated on numerous occasions to be an all powerful object that essentially dictates all things in existence. The Origin when making contact with the Master Unit was capable of obtaining the Azure’s power and was untouchable to all of humanity, and even Noel being the Successor of the Azure has gained the ability to Observe and cause Phenomena Interventions, further proven with someone like Es, who reached the Azure’s roots and have the power of the Embryo, being capable of causing interventions on all of existence itself. On top of that, Arakune, who’s gained the infinite knowledge of the Boundary talks about how the Boundary itself stems from the Azure itself, so it quite literally created this realm that’s beyond all of existence.

Going off from these descriptions on how the cosmology of BlazBlue works, the main multiverse with all of the possibilities that exists would be Multiverse level+, the Boundary transcending everything, including space and time and easily containing the infinite multiverse of BlazBlue within it like it’s nothing can make the realm potentially 5th Dimensional at bare minimum to 6th Dimensional if you factor in the Edge being the realm between both the main Multiverse and the Boundary and it lacking any components of time or any form of existence in the Main Multiverse. Lastly the Realm of the Gods due to it being the realm of the True Azure, the most powerful thing in the series and it existing in a gate beyond the Boundary itself on top of the True Azure itself being able to create the Boundary itself can make it 7th Dimensional in nature.

This is pretty powerful in of itself, but the series can go above and beyond if you factor in some other statements it has. For starters, the time-killing blade itself Hihiirokane is stated verbatim to transcend all definitions of space and time. This same weapon as shown earlier in the blog is something Terumi absorbed into himself. Being beyond all definitions of space and time would quite literally mean any and all definitions you can apply for Space doesn’t apply to it, which includes things like spatial dimensions in general, making the weapon’s power to be Outerverse level. This weapon isn’t exclusively to Terumi as in the Official BlazBlue cosplay information with Cure back in 2008 when Calamity Trigger was coming out, details of the outfits the characters wore was elaborated, and it’s explained that both Hakumen and Nu have specific parts of their body and weapons that’s made of Hihiirokane itself: Hakumen with the small gold piece on the Susano’o Unit and Nu-13 with her swords alongside Platinum's feat of recreating Hihiirokane itself, so other folks are imbued with this weapon or have the capabilities to create it. There’s also another statement about the Black Beast itself where its mere existence cannot be defined by any form of man-defined systems and theory, and how it can even destroy those concepts in general. This would mean at bare minimum things like String Theories, D-brane and Brane theories in general cannot be applied to the Black Beast itself, making it unbound by any form of spatial dimension or scientific analysis, which given how the Black Beast’s existence is tied to the Boundary, something already beyond human comprehension, it’s not that far fetched of an assumption given the realm’s nature. This can be taken to the next level with Seithr as is the fundamental building block of everything, which is not just stated by Sechs in Xblaze but is flat out shown throughout Central Fiction and confirmed by Arakune himself with the state of the world. So a weapon like Hihiirokane, which is already beyond all definitions of Space and Time, is made of something far more fundamental, which you can interpret Seithr as even the fundamental building block of what Outerversal is, and the Boundary transcending everything could imply it even transcends Seithr itself, which given it can contain an infinite amount of Seithr within it like it’s nothing, that could skyrocket the Boundary’s entire existence to be High Outerverse level as it transcends the framework of what makes anything Outerversal in the first place.

To Summarize with the overall scale of BlazBlue’s cosmology, at the lower end interpretations it can range from Multiverse level+ to Complex Multiverse level (5th to 7th Dimensional) in scale with one more potential Dimensional jump if you factor in arguments like Uncountable Infinities, where the high end interpretations of the series can reach from Outerverse level to High Outerverse levels of power.

Questions and Answers

Given all of the explanation above I could just leave it at that, but given the state of how BlazBlue’s viewed in terms of how the community sees the overall power, I think it’s best to address any and all counter arguments that have been brought up in the past or might as well be mentioned to leave no stone unturned, as weirdly enough BlazBlue as a whole is seen with more skepticisms with the high end power compared to other franchises (special thanks to some google docs that have been around for a few years that have attempted to debunk the series’ power level far below what it’s capable of) as well as just a bunch of misconceptions many folks have with the series in general. I will try my best to address any and all misconceptions the series has with scans to back everything up. Without further adieu, let us continue.

Question: Is Susano’o’s statement of being able to destroy all of Creation a statement we can take seriously?

This will take some time to explain so bear with me. The statement about Susano’o being able to destroy all of creation has this specific set of kanji that’s used when he talks about his grand plan against Amane. 森羅万象 Specifically translates to All of Creation, Everything, the Universe, All Nature, etc. For references here’s the following links.

Overall pretty consistent with how the text is defined to be. The next question you’d probably be wondering is “Why would we assume it should by default mean all of creation and not just the universe since that’s another meaning and the english version of the victory screen just says the universe?” Well we have to look deep into what Susano’o’s entire role in the story is, meaning we need to look into how the Sankishin core units operate with each other.

From the beginning Susano’o and Tsukuyomi themselves are meant to balance each other in their roles before Terumi’s inevitable rebellion. Relius describes them as the one who cuts time while the other protects time, essentially having a yin yang like relationship on their duties. They’re also described as the sword and shield of Amaterasu itself, meaning they’d have to be strong enough to aid the omnipotent god of the series in whatever way they can with how the Central Fiction artbook describes Susano’o as being its protector alongside Tsukuyomi and how it can even overpower any illusions created by the Master Unit easily. With Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu’s feats by itself, logistically Susano’o has to be comparable to them, otherwise his relationship to Tsukuyomi makes no sense for him to balance off its protection by being the destroyer of time itself and the literal god of destruction. This is further backed up with Es’ statement about Hakumen as the Sankishin Susano’o’s own power being capable of rivaling the Azure itself, something that Amaterasu uses when causing all of the interventions in the world. Even if you want to say that Es isn’t referring to the True Azure itself and might just be referring to her own Azure powers since she also obtained it in her story, that still is a high end scaling for Hakumen as Es’ powers can seal away the Boundary and mess with it in different ways as shown with Hinata and Nobody, so it would still extend beyond just the normal universe here.

The other important note to keep in mind here is he also talks about how Bystanders themselves will no longer be necessary and how they won’t be able to observe anything when he’s finished. Amane Nishiki as a Bystander is meant to replace Rachel Alucard when she started to intervene on the world way too much and is considered equals to her in every way, and Rachel was stated by Takamagahara themselves to have the capability to Observe the entire Boundary itself, and they’re omniscient supercomputer gods who do nothing but talk about factual stuff so there’s little to no reason to assume these beings are lying to her about what she’s capable of. This would heavily imply that all of creation would at bare minimum include the Boundary itself, which would make the feat higher than typical Multiversal+ given its transcendental nature over all realities.

Even if we were to assume the Universe translation itself is right, Relius himself talks about how the Universe is composed of a lot of possibilities that all extend to infinity, each being made with every new event that’s happened or any intervention that’s occurred, and as established in the cosmology section, there exists infinite possibilities and each of them are confirmed alternate timelines and worlds, so he’d still be nuking something that’s far beyond the normal definition of the universe. All in all, it’s safe to say that when Susano’o talks about being able to destroy all of creation, it’s not meant to be a random hype line, and that everything about his role in the past and what he’s capable of makes this all the more legit.

Question: Is Azrael actually ripping apart the Embryo with his strength or is it just hax?

So far from the arguments against this is the fact that it's either unquantifiable or just hax, neither of these really hold up when you look into it.

For the former, we literally are told he ripped apart the Embryo, and as established above, it’s an entire Space-Time which is capable of consuming all possibilities and erasing the worlds akin to DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, not a small fragment of it or anything, he just ripped apart the Embryo itself and entered Nine’s Phantom Field, which is a separate dimension created by Observers. The fact he was capable of tearing out reality to end up in another dimension that isn’t a part of the Embryo would already clarify this being a massive feat in of itself.

As for this being hax… this is not proven whatsoever when the entire point of Azrael is that he’s really strong. He doesn’t have any special moves or specific gimmicks on how he’s doing any of this, he literally is just built different. Kagura even states that he has a lot of strength and everything he does is just strength. Even in the BlazBlue Central Fiction artbook that talks about the arcade acts, they literally describe Azrael as ripping apart the Embryo dimension with his bare hands. Even in his final fight with Kagura and Jin, he literally stomped the ground so hard he shifted space itself and both of the characters are shocked he has enough strength to literally shift space itself. Neither of these remotely hold up and are just dancing around the most obvious solution to this, which is that Azrael ripped apart reality itself with his strength, and this same reality is capable of ending the Multiverse and other beings comparable to it are capable of messing with the Boundary itself.

Question: Can we take the Boundary feats as literal infinite to immeasurable speeds as they only stroll through the Boundary and never cross the entire thing?

One of the more questionable debunks for the series as it revolves around one scene and taking it out of context by claiming it’s what every Boundary speed feat is in general. For starters the supposed counter argument for characters traversing the entire Boundary is the fact that Terumi and Jin are only strolling around the Boundary and never actually traversing the entire thing, which to be frank, ignores literally every other feat and their context on why Infinite to Immeasurable speeds are being argued here.

For the Infinite speed, the Prime Field Devices’ entire purpose and their lore is that they’re supposed to explore the entire Boundary itself, as the library states that they’re made to traverse “the deepest reaches” of the Boundary in order to find the Master Unit Amaterasu. The Master Unit itself is also stated to exist in the deepest parts of the Boundary itself, so trying to find the Master Unit would involve having to cross the entire Boundary and not some arbitrary smaller distance. This not only supports the infinite speed feat for the Prime Field Devices when them traversing the deepest reaches involves them finding the Master Unit, but in the main story it’s confirmed the Origin was capable of traversing the entire Boundary itself to reach the Master Unit, with it being described as the deepest parts of the Boundary. Es herself is also capable of replicating this when she gains her Embryo powers, she immediately hears a Discover Call from Amaterasu and makes it in a short timeframe. So the idea of them only strolling through the Boundary and not crossing the entire thing is a weak argument that ignores a lot of context for the series and the lore for the Prime Fields, a group of beings that most of the cast directly scales to in some way shape or form. There’s also the fact that traversing through the Boundary in of itself is considered an insane feat to do, as shown when Hakumen tells Azrael that him crossing the Boundary to make it to the main world is considered an insane feat, and Jubei is told by Kokonoe that in his prime he’d be capable of crossing the Boundary with no problem.

In regards to Immeasurable speed, its main counter argument is that Valkenhayn says this out of nowhere with nothing to back up his statement on characters transcending time and space, ignoring how he’s not disproven whatsoever by Relius when he says this line, but Bloodedge Experience itself literally describes the Boundary as a realm transcending space and time itself, so yeah this isn’t just a random one off statement as the lore backs this up. This is also not factoring in other feats like Terumi blitzing Takamagahara or Ragna's Black Beast state transcending the timeline itself to cross time or Raquel reacting to Doomsday or any other feat that isn’t strictly just traversing the Boundary itself so the arguments here don’t hold up well.

Question: What about Izanami’s statement of struggling to replicate Requiem’s explosion with a calc on hand?

In terms of BlazBlue’s scaling, this particular feat has been brought up several times as a way to refute the cosmic and above scaling the series is known for. At a first glance this does look pretty damning of an evidence against the higher end scaling as Izanami is generally speaking a top tier of the verse and is shown to keep up with folks like the Six Heroes and several others and is considered a plot relevant feat given the whole part here is about stopping Requiem’s core from going out of control, but there’s some very important information that’s overlooked when trying to analyze this supposed anti-feat.

For starters it was established early on in Central Fiction that Izanami utilizes vessels in order to do anything with ease in the world, and that Relius comments that very few vessels, if any of them, were capable of handling her power. Saya’s body is special due to it having the highest resilience out of the vessels Izanami had but even this body had its limits as Relius points out that Izanami needs to be careful with her vessel, otherwise it would completely fall apart and she’d lose her best vessel. Even Terumi himself comments on how her entire Phenomena Intervention battle against Amaterasu takes a lot of energy itself and how she seems a bit drained of energy after doing it for so long.

Second off, we’d have to ignore everything that Izanami was capable of doing back in Chronophantasma. The fact that her power was capable of amping Takamagahara to the point it surpassed the Successor of the Azure’s power, the fact that she was capable of amplifying Take-Mikazuchi despite the giant being nerfed by Kushinada’s Lynchpin, and the fact that she was able to transform Take-Mikazuchi into the Embryo itself, something Relius points out are all her feats, was what’s draining her body in the process. These feats aren’t considered one off “blink and you miss it” type feats or statements as the first feat occurs throughout most of the story in Chronophantasma, the second feat being the penultimate final fight and the third feat literally kickstarting the events of Doomsday in Central fiction, plus the whole point of the Izanagi system is that Izanami herself is the opposite and equal force to the Master Unit itself. The requiem feat is not something that is the peak of her power like many would love to claim it is, as it’s just the equivalent of having Superman struggling to move a planet because he lacked access to sunlight for days on end and claim that’s considered the peak of his power level.

To summarize, Izanami literally has an in lore reason for why she suddenly struggles to replicate a planetary feat, and trying to say this is where she caps at would be disingenuous and involves ignoring everything she did the previous game.

Question: Can any form of magic help bypass the Invulnerability of being Outside of Logic?

So with the establishment on what being Outside of Logic is, it’s better to define what types of magic is considered enough to help bypass this type of invulnerability due to how cracked magic is in BlazBlue. Magic in this series isn’t a conventional form of magic you’d see in normal fantasy series like Harry Potter or Legend of Zelda, and is in fact much more potent in nature than normal. Some examples of what Magic is capable of are the following:

With these instances of what Magic is capable of, the series makes it clear it’s not a conventional form of magic some franchises has, and instead would have magic that’s more akin to Doctor Strange type of magic where it just bends the laws of reality to their whim and do far more than just mere parlor tricks. So any form of magic that’s capable of twisting the laws of reality in numerous different ways would be the kind of magic that’s sufficient enough to get through the invulnerability of those outside of logic.

Question: Can we take the Izayoi’s light as literal light speed and not just some vague interpretation of taking in light given its magical nature or the fact no one can dodge the shots?

Another somewhat contentious topic for this series, but despite the Izayoi being flat out stated to absorb Light itself, this is considered not viable for scaling because no one outright dodges the light attacks. Ignoring the fact that Tsubaki is flat being amped by the Izayoi’s light itself as that’s part of her gameplay that she consumes light to amplify her moves to become stronger and faster, one of which literally has her flying with a light projectile to attack her opponent, the Izayoi itself is capable of evolving to the Izayoi we see in gameplay, which shares very similar properties to what Tsubaki can normally do and can actually fire light shots normally, with Jin flat out dodging this shot in the story mode. Add onto the fact Kokonoe literally describes it as sucking in specific wavelengths like a black hole where not even light itself can escape from it, it backs up the fact that this is indeed actual light and characters have canonically reacted to these shots.

Question: Is the Life Link actually combat applicable since it took Nu-13 several months to come back from the events of Calamity Trigger? Or hell any part of Terumi’s Immortality as he was wounded in his spirit form and couldn’t heal that easily?

This one is yet another instance of misconceptions being spread about BlazBlue, and it involves looking into the story for actual context on what happened to Nu-13 and what exactly was harming Terumi in the first place.

To start from the top, at the end of Calamity Trigger’s true ending, Nu-13 is the only person who fell into the Cauldron as opposed to her and Ragna, and because the next time we actually get to see Nu-13 herself is during the events of Chronophantasma, which takes place 2 months after the events of Calamity Trigger, so what’s the issue here? Well for starters this is ignoring what happened to Nu-13 right after she fell into the Cauldron. Kokonoe anticipated this happening as she had Lambda-11’s body salvaged from Ibukido and needed a soul to implant into the vessel, which is confirmed numerous times to be Nu-13’s soul. So after she fell, Kokonoe snatched the soul and implanted it onto Lambda for the sake of having her own Murakumo Unit to fight for her, but at the end of Continuum Shift, we’re flat out shown and confirmed Nu-13 still retained her identity as Lambda when she saved Ragna, so she wasn’t dead in the conventional sense as she literally existed in another vessel during the events of Continuum Shift.

But it doesn’t stop there, after Lambda dies with Nu-13 passing on, we see Relius and Hazama go to the Cauldron and realizes that Nu-13 is reforming her entire existence through sheer force of will after her death while inside the Cauldron, which leads to the realm known for erasing beings from existence. So in a short timeframe she’s capable of reforming her own existence, and during the arcade mode events of Chronophantasma, she was already active and was being trained by Terumi to be the perfected Sword of Izanami, and due to Rachel’s interfering, she was going through the Cauldron to the present world to be ready to meet Ragna once again, which hasn’t happened in the main story at this point. So Nu-13 being “dead for 2 months” doesn’t make any sense when you realize she wasn’t dead for that long and was reforming her existence in a realm that erases things in a short time frame after her alternate vessel died.

On top of that, we’d have to ignore two important things about the Life Link. One is that during Relius’ Arcade mode, Hazama was already beaten to a pulp by Ragna and was left alive to stop Mu-12 from going to the Boundary to kill Amaterasu, and Relius helps out Terumi by stabbing him through the chest to render him “dead”, only for Terumi to immediately show up in Takamagahara’s realm to hijack them and he comes back to meet Ragna and co. feeling good as new despite being stabbed through the chest by a Nox Nyctores a few minutes ago. The second important part about the Life Link is that it’s stated numerous times that in order for the users of the Life Link to properly die, both of them have to die At the exact same time. If the immortality is only active after 2 months it would raise more questions than answers about how the Life Link is supposed to operate, and knowing that Nu-13 wasn’t actually staying dead for 2 months, and instead reformed her existence back after her alternate vessel died and was in the middle of her training arc throughout the time period between Continuum Shift and Chronophantasma, this isn’t a non-combat applicable immortality that others like to claim as it involves ignoring a lot of context in general.

In regards to Terumi being wounded in his spirit form and needing a while to come back, this wound was done by a Black Beast, the same Black Beast that Ragna channels his powers from, and is capable of killing Izanami herself, the literal concept of Death that can shrug off the immortal killing weapon. Saying that his immortality is not impressive because of one instance of him being wounded is not only ignoring the context of what was capable of leaving these wounds, but also ignoring the fact that the entire story makes a big deal on how immortal Terumi is and how the characters can’t just run up to him and start ripping him apart normally as it’s insufficient to killing him.

Question: Is Phenomena Intervention or Seithr’s abilities remotely combat applicable?

Yes it is. This might seem like a random question to bring up but the amount of folks who question if this ability is remotely combat applicable is more common than one might think.

For Phenomena Intervention, one of the main arguments against this being a combat applicable ability is that no one actually uses this in battle given everyone throws hands, which once again, ignores some context that’s going on. There are actual showings of the characters being capable of using Interventions or Observing in the middle of a battle with someone, with Kokonoe being capable of intervening on Jubei in the middle of a fight and she’s considered by herself and others to be a lower tier Observer. Another instance is Nine being capable of using Phenomena Intervention against Ragna during their scuffle where she just does this in the blink of an eye without any warning. Third instance is when Izanami after being stabbed and killed by Ragna is capable of activating a Phenomena Intervention, and lastly Noel while after getting through some training with managing her Observer powers, is capable of Observing Tsubaki to the point of bringing out her Izayoi form. The only reason why most fights don’t end up with people using Phenomena Intervention or just Observing in general is that most of the cast have counter measures of just outright resisting Phenomena Interventions, whether it’s having specific gears or abilities to resist it or just generally being unfazed by it due to existing outside of its domain. This is no different than arguing Naruto characters don’t use Genjutsu in fights because most fights don’t start off with them, despite the series having established counter measures against an ability like this.

As for Seithr, the entire point of the Hierarchical Cities is that Seithr in general is a toxic substance that can be fatal to anyone exposed to it, and just like the Phenomena Intervention example, characters have ways to outright resist the effects of Seithr, and every other instance with Seithr constantly describes it as deadly to those in heavy doses, with Seithr being invisible being the only form of Seithr that’s remotely harmless. So yeah both of these abilities are indeed something that can be used in the middle of a fight and isn’t something that would take a while or just need some prep time.

Question: Is BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle or BlazBlue Entropy Effect viable for scaling the series?

Despite the BlazBlue names on both of these games, they’re not tied to the overall story of the main BlazBlue series. Cross Tag Battle is mostly treated as a one off crossover game that just happens to have characters from Persona, RWBY, Under Night and several other franchises, but trying to find a placement in the main series makes no sense. For starters we have Hazama talking about how his former partner in crime Terumi separated himself and caused all forms of havoc, implying that this is just him after the events of Central Fiction, but given how Terumi is no longer there beyond Susano’o, and the fact that Ragna is still alive despite the fact that he erased himself at the end of Central fiction, it wouldn’t make much sense for Cross Tag to be considered a sequel to the last mainline game. Plus with the existence of Alternative Dark War being an actual continuation of Central Fiction’s story, it raises more questions than answers that it’s better to treat Cross Tag Battle with the same canonicity as Marvel vs Capcom to any other Capcom franchise. That being said, if you wanted to include Cross Tag Battle as a way to fully composite the series, what exactly would it bring to the table? Well we have feats of Ragna and Hakumen being sent into a dimension of infinity and Rachel stating that they both destroyed the entire dimension when escaping, Azrael just being able to resist the god powers of System XX like it’s nothing, and an incomplete Susano’o with 3% of its full power being capable of destroying all of creation itself, which would include Persona’s universe, which has evidence of being canon to the SMT universe, which has their own arguments for being Outerversal. So at best it would mostly just back up what the main series itself already had, especially when you factor in the higher end scaling the series can get.

Entropy Effect is a whole different beast of non-canon to the main story of BlazBlue, as unlike Cross Tag Battle, Arc System works didn’t actually make the game and it’s developed by 91 Act. This company has worked on BlazBlue before with Revolution Reburning being their previous take on the BlazBlue IP, but that also doesn’t really have much in terms of canonicity as it’s mostly just an abridged (and laughably botched) recap of the first 3 games with barely any plot whatsoever, and it’s mostly a side scrolling beat em up with BlazBlue characters. Entropy Effect is no different and even has a completely disconnected story revolving around SkyEyes and a bunch of robots that have little to no connection to the BlazBlue universe and is mostly just using the characters in the series for its unique roguelike mechanics. So no Entropy Effect isn’t really something that’s relevant when it comes to the overall scaling and is mostly a side game at best, albeit a really damn good side game, highly recommend it for anyone who’s into roguelikes.

Question: Is the True Azure something Terumi can scale to?

This one is a bit tricky to explain but it involves some explanation on some of the character motivations in the series to properly analyze if something like the Omnipotent Azure itself is something that Terumi can scale to, so let’s begin.

As established by Terumi, his ultimate plan in the end of Central Fiction is to gain the True Azure to become a being that exceeds Amaterasu to create his own paradise of fear and hatred to the world, rendering any of the Phenomena Interventions from Amaterasu or Takamagahara to be irrelevant. While the Sankishin Core Units are confirmed to come from the Realm of the Gods as Amane states that his failsafe plan to save everyone was to send Amaterasu back through the gates of the Azure so that they wouldn’t be a problem anymore, the Azure itself is a whole nother beast as evidenced with what Ragna was capable of when he gained the True Azure itself. Terumi says his entire plan to Ragna, Jin and Trinity even after he obtained Noel Vermillion’s status as Successor to the Azure and regaining the Susano’o Unit as he’d still need the True Azure itself for his grand plan, so that in of itself would mean the Azure is beyond all of that, but there’s one thing that could allow him to scale if you remember the final fight.

When Terumi and Ragna was cut down by Jin in the Susano’o Unit, they were both sent into the Azure Horizon and Terumi confirmed that both Ragna and Terumi were qualified to enter the realm and gain the Azure for themselves, even explaining that the Azure has no ideas related to good or evil as it’s merely pure power itself. This eventually leads to the climactic final fight between Ragna and Terumi where the former finally defeats the latter and obtains the True Azure for himself. While Terumi canonically never got access to the True Azure itself, you could argue he has the potential to gain the True Azure as out of anyone in the series, those two were the ones who gained access to the Azure Horizon. While this doesn’t put Terumi at the pinnacle of BlazBlue scaling, he doesn’t exactly need this as due to being one of the original gods and having direct scaling to Amaterasu, who’s flat out confirmed to come from the Realm of the Gods itself where the True Azure resides, he’d scale roughly around similar levels of power, but the True Azure itself would mostly just upscale from feats Amaterasu and Terumi are capable of.

Summary

Overall for the scaling for Terumi, he casually has Universe level+ feats as most of the things he do is either powering up, or crushing something that has the potential to create entire universes with a lot of the higher end scaling for him has him destroy all of creation, at bare minimum making this scaling Multiverse level+ with the existence of infinite realities, and several higher dimensions when factoring the realms like the Edge, the Boundary, and potentially the Realm of the Gods given he originates from there and is capable of matching beings that have the Azure’s power, who’s power extends to the Boundary and the realm of the gods itself. This can potentially jump another dimension if you factor in the Many Worlds Interpretation of infinite timelines branching off infinite from each event, leading to a higher level of infinity, and factoring in the high end interpretations of the franchise, it can lead the overall power level to being Outerverse level or potentially High Outerverse level depending on how you interpret the Boundary’s nature compared to Seithr and Hihiirokane. Infinite to Immeasurable speed is ridiculously consistent across the board with the series, and Terumi is no exception to it as he has feats of his own.

I’ll be honest here, I’m mostly putting Thaal Sinestro here because it’s one of the bigger matchups that’s been floating around the community when it comes to virtually anything that’s related to Terumi. With that being said, I’m not the biggest fan of this fight. Ignoring the elephant in the room, that is the DC spite matchups train where people have made numerous different DC vs non-Marvel matchups due to the win streak the series had on Death Battle, with this one being pushed really hard by folks who just want to see a DC character lose. This fight doesn’t remotely work thematically as most of the connections between the two mischaracterizes Terumi so much that it ignores most of what his story is, with the only remotely decent connection I’ve found for these two is just “they’re villain who betrayed their group and uses fear”, which is very bare bones and doesn’t really do much. Out of all the matchups Terumi has, this might be the one that might come first given it’s had a bigger spotlight than the others, but I’d greatly prefer his other options.

Michael Roa Valdamjong from the Tsukihime sub series of the Nasuverse is a pretty fun matchup to do. The snake motifs both characters have with them also being just complete assholes who relish in the torment of others with vessels to further plot their schemes while being generally speaking hard to kill in their respective universes does a lot for character banter between the two, but one of the biggest strengths about this fight is that both characters have pre-made sprites and are from 2-D fighting game series, so this fight just vibes really well. Plus in general Nasuverse can have some insane scaling when you look into the lore so this debate is pretty fascinating overall.

Kamen Rider Evolto has a lot of the similar connections that Roa from Tsukihime has, only with a bunch more story parallels between Terumi and him down to both characters having a final dark armored form that’s all about wanting destruction and recreating a world with fear being the prime emotion to fuel their desires. The only potential issue with this matchup is it wouldn’t be as easy to make a fight like this due to Kamen Rider being predominantly a live action series with CGI elements from their transformation and abilities while BlazBlue is a 2-D sprite game, so there’d come a potential issue of having to focus on one style over the other, but other than that this matchup can go really well, especially if the Kamen Rider transformations is used as a contrast with Terumi’s transformation into Susano’o and his battle cry when he’s ready to destroy everything.

Bernkastel from the 07th Expansion series, just like Evolto and Roa basically share a lot of the similarities with Terumi, though given the wild nature of the 07th Expansion series’ power level and a lot of the abstract abilities the series has like the Red and Blue truths, clashing it with Observation/Phenomena Intervention would lead to some of the wackiest things we could see on Death Battle, plus both characters are known for laughing like complete psychopaths, and Bernkastel’s entire motif is cats, which is something Terumi himself despises, so seeing that would be a treat and would lead to a pretty easy altercation.

Closing Thoughts

This was a long time project in the works, and I’m satisfied to say that it’s done. Thank you so much for reading through this blog and hopefully you can come out understanding BlazBlue as a series better than before. Huge shout outs to NormallyNormal for being able to calc some of the feats in the series, seriously he came in clutch with some of these calcs when I couldn’t find anyone to help with these feats. Special shout out to several other members of the community for helping me fact check some feats and statements such as Zack, JJSliderman, and RestaurantWorried. As for my next adventure, I’ll be tackling my all time favorite Death Battle Matchup, though not on my blog site. See you next time when Ragna the Bloodedge ventures off into the night.

  1. would characters like rachel and noel scale to the outer-high outer stuff?

    1. All of the "likely far higher" stuff I've put in the feats is meant to be including the higher end interpretations like the Outer and High Outer stuff. So if you factor in those, every single Boundary feat in General gets to Outer or potentially High Outer, so yeah Rachel and Noel would just directly scale.

    2. Hmm, I see. Wonder how this'll affect their matchups

    3. It honestly depends on which ends of the scaling you decide to use for the series. Some of them could work if you use the lower end scaling, others for the higher end scaling (Like with Bernkastel since her verse seems pretty blatantly around Outer and beyond).
